Step-by-Step Training in Nigeria

By Clement Ior

After receiving Step-by-Step Training through Disciplers International (DI), I stepped out of the boat to walk on the water. According to the ancient Chinese proverb, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a step;" our journey in discipleship training began on December 26, 2023. While others were busy boxing their gifts, we took a first step of faith into the Step-by-Step Process, marking the beginning of a transformative experience. This blog post reflects on our progress and the foundational principles that guide us.

THE FIRST STEPS

On December 26, 2023, our Step-by-Step Discipleship initial training unfolded, running through the next day with a total of 13 eager disciples. In January, we continued with two sessions, covering Steps 1-2, featuring 12 & 16 participants, respectively. These dates held a special significance to me, and with assistance from a committed disciple who had progressed through Steps 1-3, the impact was truly remarkable.

BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION

In any building construction project, the foundation is crucial. Similarly, in our discipleship journey, we recognized the importance of laying a firm foundation. We began with the Prayer of Commitment, providing participants with a solid starting point for their spiritual growth.

IMPACTFUL MOMENTS

The training sessions had a profound impact on participants, guiding them from mere belief to a deep-seated conviction. We delved into understanding God's work in reconciling fallen humanity to Himself and acknowledging the sacrificial cost He bore through His one and only Son. In Part 3 of The Prayer, we explored the personal cost of salvation. Challenging the misconception that salvation is entirely free for us (e.g. “I give you my life”), this revelation enabled participants to anchor their faith in a more substantial and enduring manner.

DEEPER CONNECTIONS

Each step of the training brought disciples into a more intimate (in-to-me-see) experience with God and a better understanding of their relationship with the Lord and people. The focus shifted from self to God as participants grasped the attributes of God and were drawn to the heart of worship. This intentional, individual, and relational approach paved the way for a deeper commitment to both the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).

MOVING FORWARD

The training model is deliberate, ensuring each participant receives personal attention, especially those who demonstrate progress in implementing the lessons learned during group sessions. This blog merely scratches the surface of the amazing journey we are on, and we look forward to sharing more insights as our discipleship training continues to unfold.
