Planting Churches and Growing Disciples in Nepal
by Sonu Maharjan & Pradip Shahi - NEPAL
We are grateful, giving thanks to God, for the opportunity to share what God is doing through Disciplers International (DI) in Nepal and beyond. As we reflect the people and places presented in our previous blog, our hearts are filled with gratitude. Thanks so much for faithfully praying for us, for our country, and for the ministry God has given us for His glory. Your prayers make a difference!
From Two Churches to Five
When we began working in Surkhet, we started by connecting with just two churches. By God’s grace, three more churches have now joined the growing network. Our intent is not simply to see churches grow in number, but to see believers grow deeper in their spiritual intimacy with God and one another. Through intentional discipleship, prayer, fellowship, and biblical training, we are seeing people become increasingly committed to following Christ and helping others do the same.
Surkhet is an important place for this ministry. As a growing city, people from many different parts of Nepal come here to study, look for employment, or prepare to travel overseas for work. All of this provides a unique opportunity to connect with believers who can continue the discipleship process when they return to their hometowns.
Investing in the Next Generation
DI Nepal is now working with people of all ages—men and women, young and old—with a particular focus on youth. We believe that many young people have the potential to become faithful leaders and disciple-makers in their communities. Our vision is to reach many people for Christ and equip young believers so that they can return to their hometowns and become spiritual leaders who help others follow Jesus.
Disciples Going Beyond Nepal
Our long-term vision is to reach every indigenous people group with the Gospel—both in Nepal and around the world. Through the Step-by-Step Discipleship Process, many young people have been equipped to follow Christ and make disciples. Some have left Nepal to work overseas so they can support their families. This is a necessity for many Nepali families, but it also creates a significant challenge for churches because future leaders are leaving. Nevertheless, we continue to see God working in remarkable ways.
Even when young people leave Nepal for employment, God can use them as His witnesses in other nations. They carry the message of Christ, build relationships, encourage other believers, and create opportunities for discipleship wherever they go. What looks challenging from our perspective can become a mission field in God’s hands.
Caring for Children in Need
Although our contribution was small, we were blessed with an opportunity to support 50 children with basic stationery supplies.
Providing for Orphans
Among the children were those who had lost their parents, those who experienced societal discrimination, and those with little or no understanding of Jesus or the Gospel.
For us, this was much more than providing stationery; it was an opportunity to show these children that they are seen, valued, and loved.
We pray that the small seeds planted through this simple act of kindness will one day bear much fruit in their lives.
A Call to Pray for Nepal
There is still a great need for the Gospel in Nepal and some areas are influenced by teachings that do not reflect the truth of Scripture. PLEASE PRAY….
….for God to give us wisdom, courage, strength, and faithful workers.
….for the unreached communities, for churches and leaders, for young people, and those being prepared to serve Christ in their hometowns and beyond.
….for God to raise up a new generation of Nepali disciples who will faithfully carry the Gospel wherever He sends them.
Most of all, pray that Christ would be glorified throughout Nepal and among Nepali people around the world.
Thank you for standing with us through prayer, encouragement, and partnership. What God is doing in Nepal is not the work of one person or one organization—it is a shared mission. Together, let us continue making disciples who make disciples, until the Gospel reaches every place God has called us to serve.
